thanks have you ridden at apalachia bay? whats it like? just wondering my friend said that its only good for dirt bikes? is that true
I try to ride there every Friday. Its only about 30 degrees today, so I am on the computer instead. It is only about 20-25 minutes from downtown Tulsa. Appalacia Bay is also known as "Motorcycle Island". It really isn't an island, as there is a road that connects it to land, but it is completely surrounded by water otherwise. Keystone Lake is listed as being down 4.43 feet this morning. That opens up a whole lot of extra riding. The lake has been down all winter, and the beaches around the island provide lots of sand to race and ride on. At the far end is an area that is actually an island when the lake is at normal levels. Right now, you can ride right out there without getting wet at all. As far as bikes go, there are some trails that are so deeply washed and rutted that they are more suited to bikes, but given all the sand, quads are really the best choice. There are plenty of smaller hills to climb, wooded trails, and even rocks, if thats your thing. There is usually plenty of mud, but lately that is in short supply, unless you go out into the lake. Mostly we ride the sand on the beaches. The drawback is that most of the riding is pretty remote, and it can be very difficult to get help to anyone that gets hurt. It is pretty common for them to bring in a helicopter for the injured, but the paramedics have to call it in once they have got to the person and evaluated them, which could take a couple of hours. That said, I suggest that you don't go out there alone, as a minor difficulty can be a huge problem if you don't have a buddy. When the water is higher, you must spend a lot more time riding in the woods to get around. I highly recommend a helmet if for no other reason than to protect your head from low hanging branches. My new helmet already has plenty of scuffs to show thats its been working to protect my head.
A smaller, more open area is even closer to Tulsa. It is called the "Whitewater Recreation area" It is on the sout side of the Arkansas river, just below the Keystone dam. It is currently closed for the Bald Eagle nesting season as it does every year, but I think that it opens back sometime in March. This area is almost all sand, lots of mud when the rains come, and some hills out at the south edge. Its a much better area for less experienced riders to enjoy. You don't have to worry nearly so much about anyone running you over as you do at Appalacia. I won't go there on the weekends anymore, because it does get congested on the weekends.
