me and some buddys have been thinking about going up there this summer. hows the riding.. very big place...uve' prolly been to badlands, is it about the same size or bigger
also heard they'll only let so many ppl in during the day, and you have to have a voucher or suntin like that any truth to that.. but yeah i prolly wouldnt mind going

It is about the same size as the badlands. Its mainly wide open area, only a few wooded trails in the center. The hills are not as steep, but some are bigger. On my Z I prefer SL, on my Grizzly I prefer the badlands.

Vouchers shouldnt be any trouble to get except for holiday weekends. They stop using them after Labor day (open through the end of Oct.).

where is this silver lake what state is it in?

I was thinking of taking a trip down to silver lake but I got an FMF factory four full system and was wondering how strict they are on the sound regulations there. I do have the quiet core insert but it is still around 96 - 98 decibles anyone think it would pass? Also has anyone crossed the border before and what is all involved with bringing a quad across?

i mite get back there on the 7th but not sure yet, August 17-19 is looking good.
when we ride there we often park near the check gate. i've yet to see any one
turned back for noise, they do check for spark arresters (dont dare turn the sand to glass)
last time i was there the place was a wreck, that was two week ends ago ,hills are still there but the 4x4 trucks are doing their best to knock them down. high wind has moved alot of sand in to the big flat area making sand driffs,at high speed it can surprise you,so much for the 700' drags strip.
hey we could get a whole lot of rain and flood it that should level it out .

When is the best time to go to silver lake? or is it crazy thier most of the time?

I was on thier web site and I thought I read that all bikes had to pass 94 decibles to ride the dunes thats all.

during the week its dead. the only time its "crazy" is holiday weekends. I suppose drag weekends get a little busier too.

what about boarder crossing anybody cross the border with a bike before?
from US to Canada or Canada to US? how difficult is it?

I would think if you have all paperwork with you, stating the quad belongs to you, you would have no trouble. Allthough I have not crossed borders, so I do not know for sure. I would contact a border agency and ask. I would also make sure they know it is for recreation purposes.

worst case scenario, they strip it down to the frame and give you the pile of parts. so, bring your service manual

LOL!!! its not the first time I had that thing down to the frame, hay maybe I can get it powder coated this time LOL!! Whats it like at silver lake is it well worth the 9-10 hour drive? is there any big sand dunes or hills to climb cause I love the look of some of those huge dunes I see plastered in those atv mags!!!

If you have never rode sand before.......hell ya it's worth it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! None of the hills are what I would call huge, but still too much fun!!!!!! A lot of drag racing goes on down on the flats(thats where you will find me). All in all a very good time!!!!!!!!

So, how's the sand? Strip still whooped out and nasty? or is it better now???

I'll be making a day trip out there sometime during the week of August 20th through the 26th, anyone going to be out there around that week?

I'll try to make it. I NEED to get there before the snow flies. too many things keep coming up and setting my trip further back.

oh, and its worth the drive. its 8 hours for me!

EDIT....its my weekend off too. if I can get there, it would be the 23-26 of august.

I think I need to have a Pass Port to cross the border now, other than that I would be there unless something big came up at work!! I always wanted to ride in the dunes and I don't think we have any in canada, It kinda sucks here that way for ATV'ing

Im that first picture are those dead birds? thats what it looks like to me......

them things in the sand are sticks, ya know, wood. there are places were you have to watch out for them.
i took some pic's of the crowd 07/07/07 , it was stupid how many people were there, mostly at the beach,and of course ya have your hill top sitters, for some reason jeep's climb test hill
and then just sit there.

the big strip was in very bad condition, the flat area near the beach was ok

I always wanted to get out to the dunes but oregon is too far.

I'm pretty sure they are in michigan not oregon and to get your quad over the border you have to have insurance, tell them where your going how long your gonna be and what the purpose of the visit is.You dont need a passport yet but soon you will. Then depending on how old you are they are gonna pull you over and search your vehicle. We take the tractor puller over all the time and as long as you have some one who looks like a respectable adult with you then its usually not too bad. Its so bad that i dont even bother if i want something i just order it and pay the duty because last time we crossed the border they cut both spare tires in my buddies tempo apart.

Ok what I actually ment was that Oregon sand dunes is WAY farther than silver lake sand dunes. so silver lake is a better choice for me. And I did find out that I dont need a passport just yet. I didnt think I could go across the border so I took my girlfriend on a vacation and ran into a guy that told us that he crosses the border all the time without a passport. but I need to get one for next year though.

I will be there on the 28th. I will be on my white yfz, riding with a black banshee, and red blaster.

Ill be lookin for ya. I will be on my yellow z with lakers, and my bro will be on a stock z with white plastics and red pdcoated frame.

I don't think it was you. I walked on most other 400 series quads that day. ex's ltzs included.

The dude kikin my azz was a yfz fo sho. we stopped and talked briefly, he inquired about my asv levers.

pretty sure it was witti. thats a fast ride hes on. hes gotter tuned.

Something that did happen that did not follow usual suite was i got beat by a couple ltr250's. I can usually takem pretty easy.

I took my chit to the dyno a few days later and found out all my valves were jacked out shape.

Dude on kawi motocycle went end over end. Then a guy behind him on a 450r went end over end and broke the fiberglass shaft from flagpole off in his back.

The fat chic just laughed and drove off while we pulled shards of fiberglass out of the guys back.
