ok i just bought a 06 kawi 400. i love riding it but now im trying to find out where everyone rides. and trying to find people to go riding with. ive been to capital forest, and have heard of belfair but never been there. i live in tacoma
KFXguy2006
Belfair is pretty nice, but can be very dusty in the summer. I like Capital better for that reason. You can go east to Moses Lake dunes or head down to Oregon to there dunes.

There are a few of us on here that live in the area. Let us know anytime you wanna go riding. We are going to Moses Lake at the end of the month if your up for it.
sluke06
sent you a msg. yea i have a trip planned to go to the dunes in oregon beginning of july.

I live by Yakima, any chance I can tag along? Only problem is that i dont have paddle tires but i could go without
KFXguy2006
Yeah, that would be cool. You really don't need paddles there. You gonna come for the whole weekend?

KFXguy2006
If they are bald then that would be a problem, I have never run paddles at Moses.

We are going on the 29th and leaving the 1st.

w00ter maybe I can get something together for that weekend also! itd be cool to meet up with some of ya for a good ride!
KFXguy2006
Yeah, we would love to that 470 in action bowdown.gif

yeah, i just got my K&N today and ordered that part and also a dyno jet kit, they should be in by Tuesday, im not taking my quad in for servicing after all. Since i only got the K&N i shouldnt go very high on the jets right? mabey just bump it by one or two? Whats the stock jet size any way?
KFXguy2006
Is that the only mod? Are you running with or without the airbox lid? With the lid on, you shouldn't have to make any jetting changes. Stock jettings is 22.5 pilot, non adjustable needle and a 130 mikuni main. You are getting dyno jets, so the sizing is alittle different. There is a list of the differences floating around here somewhere, I will try and find it.

yeah, im saving up for a new air box and an exhaust,

ill spend a day or two trying to make the most of what I got, is it really that big of a deal to change the pilot jet? if im right dyno only makes their kits with mains
KFXguy2006
Pilot is easy, right next to main. You will not med one until after you get a full system exhaust, and even then you may not need it.

If you are only running the open airbox, I would start with a 145 main and go up or down from there depending on how it runs.

would enough air beable to travel through the stock exhaust to make a big enough difference to need a larger jet? the directions recommend 126 with the cover on, then stage two 2 w/ the cover off recomends an aftermarket exhaust

also compared to mikuni, is dyno bigger or smaller per number,
KFXguy2006
Yeah, you will need a small change in jetting. Stock is 130 main, so 126 is wrong. Mikuni mains are bigger, here is the comparison chart.

Mikuni Dynojet
140 149.3
___ 150
142.5 152.0
145 154.7
___ 155
147.5 157.3

oh sweet, yeah so ill start like you said, should i worry about checking the color of the spark plug or should it be fine if i tune the fuel screw accurate enough and the quad runs good.

also on the step four of the 1 stage instructions, is it saying i have to drill away at a piece and the fuel screw is right behind it?

http://www.dynojet.com/pdf/Q316.pdf

Edit: I have the front fender out of the way, drained the gas tank, removed it and located the top of the carb and took it off to take a look, took out the diaphragm to take a look, has a peice stuck inside of there then a rod coming out the bottom (just taking a look) replaced it, the spring and top,

right now im using this: http://www.albaaction.com/service/z400pipe.htm

for my directions, so i found the top of the carb, but out of that and the dyno jet instructions im kind of lost. Dyno jet shows how the needle, springs and the main jet all go in order and the picture of the carb, (hope im making sense) but if im correct, the needle and slides and w/e is located inside of the diagram and i simple replace the needle there, then the jets and the fuel screw are all located on the underside of the carb where i have to take the carb out in order to get at? Hope you can understand my question
KFXguy2006
Yes there is a fuel/air behind there. Drill out the plug.

Are you putting on an exhaust system or just the airbox lid removed? If just the airbox lid, I really don't think you need the needle in right now. You will need it for an exhaust. I would just put in a bigger main.

Check the jetting thread, it will help shed some light on some of your questions.

ok, so im probly going to do the fallowing:

replace needle, 2nd position
main to 146,
put everything together
warm up the bike
tune the fuel screw
go for a ride
if its rich, ill change the needle to pos 1, if it doesnt work ill go to pos 3 and go down a size

if its lean, move the needle to pos 3, etc. etc.

sound good enough?
KFXguy2006
I would do needle in second position, 3rd is really for bike with exhaust systems or other mods. Turn the fuel/air screw in all the way and then out about 2 turns to start. Your not gonna need much of a change. Once you get your exhaust, then you can make more changes.

well the spark plug is pretty dark so its been running rich whole time stock, so i doubt it will end up lean, right?
