hey i just was wondering if anyone else has cut there exhaust before, to shorten it, make it louder, or to give it more bottom end. i just did it too my hmf pipe i think it looks knarly , ill post pictures of it on the bike tommorrow probably but heres one of my buddy stewey holding it in the hall.

making it louder isnt nececarrily a good thing. tick off the neighbours gets trails closed etc. to shorten to make look better on the other hand is always cool. get some pics posted as soon as you can.

yep, or going out to the track then it dont matter, i was just at the track this weekend and my bike is pretty loud , but compared to those ice oval sleds man those things are loud, they pop your ears 30 feet away!!! they completly drown out my bike and mine is around 110 db.
YOURADHERE

Shaa....it's cute. mhihi.gif

Looks nice. Get some pics once it's mounted up.
rumlesj1
yep looks very slick.

i have a quiet core in my hmf, because it was either that or i was grounded. i would like mine a tad bit louder if it gave more power, but my dad wouldn't and i'm sure my neighbors wouldn't. but i would get mine as quiet as possible if i didn't lose any power.

zookie400
a lot of people dont realize that noise does not = more power

how does that thing sound? its so short i wonder if its any different than a straight pipe?
jmax857RACING
hey so heres some pics of it on the bike as i promised. my camera at home wont work so i had to upload them from my cell phone so they are kinda crappy pics but whatever, and my bikes kinda dirty but its the middle of winter so i cant clean it cause its -30 outside. i think it looks wicked, but im thinking when i get a chance to start it and take it for a ride it may be nasty loud, so i might get a quiet core i dont know yet. but i read somewhere that a lot of people cut curtis sparks exhausts and get a big difference in bottom end, would that be true?

soberagain150
from what i gather is that people usually put the shorty exhaust so there brake caliper doesnt dent the exhaust can? am i wrong? i mean yeah i know some people prolly want it louder and it may look better etc, etc... but for stunting a crotchrocket its silimar because they would make a shorty pipe so it doesnt drag on the ground when they are doing a 12 o'clock wheelie like the "little" man in my avatar. does look clean tho. nice work nonoftheless
z400kiksazz
hey sober do highmount exhaust ever drag?? i heard what they were good for was kneedragging, otherwise I see no point in highmounts......
jmax857RACING
well i tried it last night and it is really loud but it sounds good though. i wouldnt reccomend doing it if you would get in trouble with sound issues.
rumlesj1
probobly would sound good if you were racing it, definitly would turn some heads.

yeah it would sound goodits more of a raspy sounding than a hollow sound like before.
LittleMissE
Are you going to be able to have any dyno graphs of the before and after? I am wondering b/c I to have an HMF pipe and if it works out good I would consider doing that myself. But only if it has prove of being good.
Computer Tech
is rejetting necessary when shortening a pipe. i am thinking of doing this to my DMC afterburner comp pipe If i can get someone to do it for me or If I buy all the tools for cutting, etc....

yeah, alot of racers use high mounts. and helps for need dragging, they help alot. which is one of the many reason alot of bike companies are going to a tail exhaust now. my buddy uses a high mount for his race bike and loves it. but they will be trashed if you ever drop your bike... lol
mana_z400
dayym! it looks nicer than mine! mhihi.gif

Honstly , there is very very very samll gain out of this , I had my exhaust for 2 years , after doing this , i found that their is a very mini gain at higher rpm's , but the noise hurts my ears! , i only ride at dunes , so no problems with neighborhoods....

honestly you wouldnt notice a difference with that ghetto contraption, and i didnt have to rejet mine runs fine without rejetting, its not even that hard to do it only took me about two hours. but anyway, i took it for a ride and its noticeably different, it revs faster and has less on top, but i also had 18's on and not 20's so i think that has a lot to do with it too, but it really does sound nice i took a video that ill post within the next few days that i took when trying it out.
holtzer1
ghetto contraption? its a cut pipe.....just like yours icon_eek.gif
kfx400boy
looks like it used to be an fmf.
PMSracer
most of what your feeling is probobly from changing the rear tire sizes... from 20s to 18s is a HUGE diff. while ridin

looks like yours only not black...

whats next? rice burner cans on quads?if you wanted to be louder you could have just taken all your packing out...

personally i think it looks like it should be on a kfx 90 icon_biggrin.gif
kfx400boy
Im really not liken the shorty exhaust either. But for some resone i like them on the yfz tho. like the nmotions exhaust.
holtzer1
it looks good...to an extent. you can go overboard and tke too much off, ad it looks plain silly. you gotta find the balance.not too long, not too short.
thats what she said anyway

True, but i like the way the full exhaust looks.
jmax857RACING
i know the 18s are the biggest difference im noticing is the 18's. and i think it looks good but not what i thought, i really like the look of them on the yfz's like the tcracing pipes look wicked. but still looks nice and i did it properly and its not held on with ugly universal rubber mounts and fiberglass exhaust tape.

those nmotion pipes are SICK!!!!!! if they made them for a z id have it before it came out.... they look good short because have you seen how fat they are? those things are like a 6 inch diameter can thats a foot long.... im jealous of the yfz for gettin that exhaust

his is exactly the same as yours. those are the regular fmf clamps, and that is heat tape to protect the plastic from melting.

not trying to start a fight , but what do you mean by ghetto contraption?

and yes (as camaro and other guys said(thanks) ) , this is not a universal rubber fibershit muffler , it's FMF Factory4 (removed end cap) , which has been cut , i know , it looks crap , becoz i did it in a cheap indian garage (cost me $6 icon_biggrin.gif ) , and let's be honest dude , there is no way in the holy hell you see a diffrence from a muffler alone , ture i said there was a gain , but the truth is the exhaust gas is just flowing the same , here's an example , on my car , when i had the 3 exhaust muffler , i used to feel the car is slow and rev slow , after removing ALL the 3 mufflers (straight pipe) , at first i was happy and thinking it's fast and rev much faster , after some races i notice that the gain of 3 mufflers was very minimum , and wait , u said there was a diffreance in gain , but u didn't rejet it , Normal people rejet even when putting a slipon...

Louder Sound Doesn't equal More Power My Friend.....

You can`t blame mana_Z for FMF having some of the fugliest mounting straps known to mankind mhihi.gif ...that`s not his fault! FMF is 1 of the best pipes out there...they just have downright chitty lookin` mounting straps is all.

mana_Z: Why aren`t ya running the endcap??? (It would look alot better w/ it on there! smile.gif ).

jmax857: I DO like the looks of your shortened HMF...you DEFINITELY got it down to the same size as a TC Racing muffler!!! icon_cool.gif

That said.....

I think I`ll just leave mine at the 12" length (the standard HMF`s are 16"...but they`ll make them 12" if the customer requests it though...at least they did in the past anyway, not 100% sure if they still do it anymore though) because it makes plenty of racket the way it is mhihi.gif & I`ve heard one`s that are as short as your`s is & yeah...it`s a bit louder yet! shocker.gif

Easiest way to explain it is to tell ya to just jump over to the "Post up pics of your Z" thread over in the Images & Videos" section & check the last few posts on the last page. ManaZ & NJC wondered the very same thing & I explained it to them there. smile.gif
jmax857RACING
yeah that looks different? but wierd man! anyway has anyone ever tried to make dvx plastics into a 2 piece? cause its such a pain taking them off all in one piece.

I SURE HAVE THOUGHT ABOUT IT!!! And whenever I get the time, motivation, and parts its going to happen. I'm thinking right at the kink below the seat, then put in an aluminum bracket secure the two pieces together at that same point. THe idea has definetly been kicked around my garage for a while.

Yes , that's true , because when i had shortend mine , even with helmet on and even if i am riding in a wide open dune area at WOT , your Ears will just Hurt you so bad , as if they'r going to burst!

I have to admit , it look much nicer! icon_biggrin.gif
JETS_Z400
YUP!!! That looks ALOT better now mana!!! smile.gif

& YUP!!! I bet that is LOUD as H3LL for sure!!! eek.gif mhihi.gif
jmax857RACING
sweet, the one you posted looks kickazz, and i know what you mean at WOT it really barks out and is extremely loud. im gonna get a quiet core just so i have the short looks but its not so loud. and i definately think we should come up with some ideas to make the dvx plastic two piece!

jmax857RACING
i did't want to take my packing out, because i dont want my bike to sound like it has a folgers can on it. and it looks sweet as hell.

Wear your ear plugs guys! Loud pipes are cool until you get a little older and you have lost your hearing. My left ear is pretty much useless now!

Loud pipes don't seem very cool anymore.
jmax857RACING
if its too loud your too old! lol jk, i know what you mean, and i bought some yesterday because i needed some anyway for another hobby i do.
Enigma66
Didn't mean to sound like your grandad icon_biggrin.gif Just sux to have a constant "emergency broadcast signal" ring in your ear and you cant hear a flippin thing.

I was 37 when I lost most of the hearing in my left ear. Pipe was on the left too. Hmmmmmmm
