Full Version: Hid Installation ----- Lots Of Pics

I thought I'd throw put together how I installed my new HID from Xentec. My objectives in changing were to get the most light output without adding buggy style lights and also without changing my stator. I bought the kit from Ebay for about $75. The kit came complete with two ballasts, two h6m HID bulbs, wire harnesses and odds and ends to aid the install. Total power is 35 watts per ballast.

Since it looked like rain I decided to throw up some shade. Glad I did because it rained 5 minutes after I got it up.

I decided to add a plate mounted under the handlebars to mount the ballast to. The plate measures 6" x 3.75" and I mounted it with one bolt. The pic shows two but I had to remove the second to make a bit extra room.

The ballast that were sent to me were larger than the other ones the company sells for another $10. I would have spent the extra if I'd realized the which ones I was getting. These were mounted by double sided pad included.

Because the bulbs are h6m replacement I was trying to keep as much of the same stock setup as possible. To make life easy I removed the headlight assembly and harness.

I decided I would chop up the bulb harness and use the mechanical clip and spring. To do this I removed the electrical contact. This is as easy as just pulling one side down uneven and lifting the other through the hoe in the clip. It can now be used with the spring to hold the bulb in the headlight.

I now reattached the boot. The kit includes the connectors unattached so this made fishing the wire through the boot easy. Once through, the connectors were attached and the headlight was reassembled.

Now the question as to how to wire. Probably the easiest way to deal with this is to tie the grounds together and the high and low with the ballast power leads. This would mean both lights are on no matter how the dimmer switch is positioned. Here I cut the stock connector since I already destroyed it to get the clip. If I need to go back to stock lights I'll only need the headlight harness since I didn't mod the one on the quad. Much easier.

I wanted to retain the high, low functionality so I used a relay. I'll put together a wiring diagram in a day or two on how to do this. I have to update this with a diode to get it to work correctly. Without the diode I can use the switch to turn on the high beam, but changing back to the low won't work because the coil stays energized.

Here is a look with the front clp back on with the ballast and bulbs connected.

Awesome! I'm doing this once you lay out all the details for us. Oh, and one thing....where is the ebay link to the kit? That's a good deal!

Yep, thats the one. That one has the smaller ballast and would be much easier to install. I would rate the kit quality high. Everything fit nice and seemed to be decent quality. As for reliability I can't say yet. Only time will tell. I'll try to get some pics of the lights once I finish the wiring tonight. I work in electronics so I'll steal the diode I need today and get a wiring diagram up later. I had them on last night and wow.......I blinded my wife when she pulled in the driveway, home from work. Way better than stock!

I definately want to do this once I see your full write up. How hard would you rate this on a scale of 1-10...10 being most difficult.

If your fairly handy with things I would say a 4 or 5. If wiring and chopping scares the hell out of you then a 10. Note the only thing I cut up and modified off the quad was the little harness attached to the headlight assembly. If something happends and you need to go back to stock then this is all that needs to be replaced. I know I've seen them on ebay. The hardest part for me was cutting the plate and getting the ballast aligned without binding the existing cabling.

I've had that kit on my Raptor for about 8 months now and will be adding to the wifes KFX soon. Those kits are very great. One note though for install. Make sure you put the connecotrs together properly and that they plug into each other. I put one terminal in upside downa nd was chasing ghost as to why it would flicker and die.

Looks like I may have a bad ballast. I was looking into finalizing my wiring setup and blew a fuse. I traced it to a ballast. I've read good things about this kit and the seller. I've emailed him so we'll see how it goes. I may ask to trade up for the smaller ballasts. Stay tuned.........

hmmm... i read on here from someone that he had to cut out the holes on the headlight and epoxy on some new ones for this to work.
shoulda stayed with stock plastics... i miss headlights but a pair of these might be on their way for once -in-a while trips

Check and double check your connections. A lot of people have thought they had bad ballast when it is just a connection. Also try cutting the plug connections and soldering or crimping them instead.

I'm sure it's the ballast. Not that I'm not capable of mistakes but I'm an electrical tech by trade so I know my wiring was clean. I wasn't finished with it but what I had was good. He's going to warranty the ballast and upgrade to the smaller ones. Once I get everything straight I'll come back and finalize the post. I have the dimmer circuit all set but didn't get to test it since the ballast failed. Actually if anyone is interested, here it is.......

I personally didn't use the relay set up on my quad seem to work fine. How come you didnt just mount the ballasts onto the headlamp assembly itself? Wouldn't that have been easier so you wouldn't have to deal with unplugging everything if you ever had to take it out?

Make sure you have a decent ground too. Instead of using the ground supplied try just grounding to the frame or a frame bolt. Also check and make sure you have all of the wires correct because you are switching over to a one beam system you have to utilize either the high beam or low beam wire. I think it is yellow or white as the positive wire on both of them depending on how you want to wire it.

I wanted a flat spot on he frame to mount the ballast. I thought about under the plastic itself but felt were I mounted it felt a bit more professional. I only have to remove the four wires leading to the bulb. Either way. The relay makes it possible to retain a high/low beam capability. Low = one light, high = both.

Look up four posts to the schematic. Obviously you can wire them both to one side or the other, but what fun is that?

Thanks, Chuck. It's not quite finished yet but I'll be back to fix and add anything after I get the replacement ballast in a week or so.

Not really hat much work....just some time. HID's are way better than stock. Once I get my replacement I'll finish this post with some pictures.

i was hoping u would get a replacement from this guy cause afew people from other forums have the same problem about replacements. They said dont expect a replacement that u just need to buy another. Theres a big write up on raptor forum about installing these i read awhile ago and a few people had them go bad and never recieved a replacment from him.. I dont know if they bought them from this same seller but i know they tried a couple diff sellers with the same result. hopefully u here back from him and keep us updated to what happens..
MR.Poopie
You can request his information from ebay and then call that sorry SOB.

Well since today is the the 1 month anniversary of my returning the ballast for warranty and they still didn't come, I decided to celebrate by placing a dispute in paypal. Lets see how this goes. Looks like at the least I will own a nice set of HID bulbs for the rock bottom price of $75. Please avoid this company, pliao33@hotmail.com and company name is XenonAutoHaus. On three separate occations I emailed him with the delivery comfirmation number and the receipt from my paypal transaction. Each time he said he would look into it and never got back to me. The only comfort I get is the fact that he won't be getting any business from this site. I'm sure if everything had worked out, he would be getting a few sales from this post. F' him.
MR.Poopie
Screw him then! Thats why i dont like Ebay, to many scams... Same with craigslist.

Pm me later, i might be able to help you.

You won't find it anymore. One Industries stopped making it. I had some issues with it fading. They were not helpful.

heres a couple kits that people have had good luck with. Simple racing and KBrown. Ive never heard of any problems with either and simple racing has good customer support. They both cost alot more but they are whole kits with relays and all.

Also if u try the ebay ones it seems people are having better luck with the slim ballast. People still have problems. some have had no problems but theres still afew people that only get a couple rides out of a ballast.
