I was thinking of adding one of those 4" hid lights that Kragen sells. I know alot of guys that have put them (the 7" model) on Rhinos and rails and have had no problems. For 100 bucks I might try to mount one on my quad. I was checking out stators and came across some upgrade bulbs........I'm going to try and attach a link. I was wondering if anyone had used these, not even sure if they are right for the quad but they have 45 watt super bright bulbs.............

https://www.rickystator.com/catalog/product...?products_id=81

The other thing I was thinking of with the hid light was tying it into the high beam and disabling the high beam on the stock lighting. That way I wouldn't be pulling too much juice. Or would it be OK....can the stock stator handle one more light?
LTZguy
why dont you do what i did,,,,put hids in the stock housing,,,,,its hella bright.
eric.w.13
what hid kit did you install in the stock location?
KFXguy2006
Probably like this....

thats what i was thinking... i wonder if he ever got that ballast replaced

no i was talking about drz002. he bought a HID light kit off ebay and tried forever for them to replace the ballast. last i heard he hasn't got it replaced

That's the one.

What about the bulbs that Ricky Stator sells? Anybody try something like that?
Spent the last 5 days at Glamis and stock lighting is right on the edge of being unsafe............I love night rides but alsways feel that I don't have quite enough light.

Yea i tried em.....they are doo doo. My battery would go dead cause the stator could not keep up. Do yourself a favor, for $85 shipped, you can order a set of slim ballast H6m HID kit and go in your stock housing. I got pics of the install if you wanna see. Its not exactly plug and play if you want everthing neat. I shortened my wires and mounted them to the back of the headlight housing.

Did you get yours off ebay? How do the ballasts hold up in the wet? You said one of them went out? How long did it last? I would like to see some pics..

I got em off ebay, there are like $85 shipped. They hold up good in water. i think the one that went out was just a unlucky occurance. I have an HID kit on my Z250 and no problems. I bought another ballast for like 25-30 bucks...no biggie. I do ride in deep water ALOT, and go muddin too. When I took the defective ballast apart there was no water, would not matter anyway and the whole inside was filled with epoxy. you could take the board out of the case and it''l still be waterproof. i highly recommend. Do a search for "slim H6 HID" on e.....cant find it, send me a pm with your e-mail addy and i'll send you a link....make sure you get a 6000k or under...and higher and you lose brightness and it starts getting purple....unless you like that.

Make sure you keep track of how much power you are pulling if your still on the stock stator. I looked into this when I was figuring out lights for the Heartland Challenge. If I remember correctly the stock stator puts out 150 watts. After it runs everything else (like the fan) you are left with about 70 watts to run lights. I was able to run a 40 watt 4" HID along with the stock high beam (35 watts?). Now this is running on edge of what the stock stator can handle, but it did do it. Just remember to keep track of how much power your lights need and how much you have available.

I very easily could be wrong........but wouldn't you be pulling 70 watts with the high beam on?
How'd that 4" HID do?

I would like to just do the conversion but it sounds like there have been issues.......

there is no high beam. just low. you do not need high with this amount of light. i have had 0 issues. if i'm not mistaken after the bulbs warms up and the ignitor cuts off i think its only pulling 15 watts per bulb. maybe not? i know it draws less power than the stock bulbs tho....i have them on my 250 and my 400 and love them. i night ride all the time and never have a cranking problem.
eric.w.13
this is what i am going to go with when i change. that is a ton cheaper than the trail tech frame mounted HIDs
klm20_2000
You'll be very happy with the HIDs. You will never want to ride with stock headlights again.
LTZguy
EXACTLY!!!
spize909
OK so if you have the high beams on with the stock lighting.........what kind of wattage is it pulling? Is it 35 or 70?
I thought that it would be 70 with the high beams.
I figured if I had the stock lighting and only utilized the low beams and wired in the external hid light to the high beam side (so it would come on when I switched to high) I would be safe as far as the stator goes.
The 4" light at Kragen is 35 watt (at start-up). Maybe it would be best to hook that into the low beam......let it warm up and then if I needed more I could hit the high beam. Of course I could have this all screwed up...
eric.w.13
unless you plan on adding a switch if you did away with your stock high or low beam and used the cut wire to power that wire then you will only have a high or low beam and then the HID. make sense? basically the only way that the high and low beams can be on at the same time is if you connected both of the wires to one side of the switch. then when you turned the switch to high the stock lights would go off and the HID come on. if i was you i might just look into the kit mentioned above or go with 2 of the 4" lights and not even use your stock lights. you could actually use the hid kit mentioned above AND the 4" lights and be ok for you stator. then you would have plenty of light
LTZguy
Dude. I can promise you, if you put the HIDs in your stock housing, you will be amazed. I can take some better pics this weeked of mine if you like. Or...you can wire it up where all your lights come on any which way you like. I can help you with that. I installed car audio and alarms for 10+ years and have an extensive knowledge on relays, diodes, resistors and whatnot. You just let me know how you wanna hook it up and I'll help you through it. But really, you will be extremly pleased with the lights in your stock housing. everytime I go night riding i overpower everyone elsdes lighting by a huge amount. Short story, I was riding next to my buddy with hisd brand new brute force 750 and he stopped and told me he thought his stator wasn't working and killing his battery and he was gonna have to bring it in for warranty repair. I laughed. My lights were so much brighter it was almost like his wernt on. I turned mine off and he was tripping out. he wanted a set for his.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. I would do away with the high or low and have the hid come on with it.

I think this is what I'm gonna do. Which kit should I get (bulb and power)and do the bulbs go right in without any customization?

Just type on ebay H6m slim HID and you'll come up with a few things. The only thing is you'll have to slip in your original plug. Do yourself a favor and splice in the plug on the headlight housing. Don't cut the one on the bike. any questions just ask. I have been meaning to post pics of my install...i think I have some. You will not use hi beam any more either.

I should get my kit today.
Not sure what you mean by "splice in the plug before the headlight housing". I assume you mean make the splice on the front end plastic side of the connection to the harness. That would mean that I have to mount the ballast to the plasics somehow.
I was thinking of using some stainless I have and making a mounting plate and attaching it to the frame with the ballast attached. Like the guy did in the pinned write-up.
I would like to see your pictures to see how yours was done.

I can upload a pic this evening. if you got the slim ballasts you can screw them to the back of the headlight housing. Then electrical tape the two smaller boxes together and screw em at the top in the recess above the head light. Then i wired them to both come on on low. I may change that though. I'll post pics later. If I don't pm me to remind me.

here yall go

Thanks for the picture. My kit is similar but not quite the same. I'm trying to figure out how some of those connections go together......it didn't come with any kind of real wiring diagram. There are some connectors that look like they should already be on there and they are not. I'll figure it out (I think).
Did you put anything on those screws to keep them from backing out? Dab of silicone? What kind of screws are they. Looked like dw screws at first.

What was it like spicing the two ballast wires together? Just 2 wires? I think mine are shorter to the plug.

They are really short coarse thread. I just wired + to + and - to -..... do you see the plastic loop things, I used those to secure the two smaller ignitor boxes after taping them. Everything is soldered and don't forget dielectric grease on the plug connections. The ballast wires are just two. make sure you use a voltmeter or test light to find out positive on the factory plug, and test it before you solder or crimp if thats what your doing. If you do crimp (not recommended) make sure you put dielectric grease there too....anything else just ask...
