I ussed a 13 and i loved it pulled the front end up in 4th gear and my motor is pretty much stock, take the 13 and 14 out there really easy to change.... i went riding with 2 450's and a CRF 250 through the dunes 4th pinned the whole time and i kept up with them, it was so dope, then i went on a ride where i was the ONLY quad and 4 dirt bikes and i kept up with them again 4th pinned through the dunes, so idk if that sproket helped but i liked it alot
green meanie 440
with sand stars? run a 13/42 combo.... no joke, they rob all your low end and this helps get at least a little bit back, you lose about 8-9 mph on the top end, but its still fast

Gearing is not going to be the determining factor on whether you'll keep up with the 450's. I think its more rider ability than anything. Sand stars are too much traction for a stock 400 motor. Some standard V-paddles would be better. My GF's bike is stock gearing and has Sand Skate II rear paddles, and I can smoke 450's when we're racing across the dunes. I wouldn't worry about keeping up with 450's, as long as you can ride.

Yeah, I would run a 13t.....you will not regret it.

Gearing is a big factor...if he was running gearing that doesn't allow him to bounce the limiter in 5th, then his gearing is too tall and is not gonna be as fast.

Yes, thats a true statement and I think a 13 tooth will be fine. But like I said, its probably not gonna be the DETERMINING factor whether he'll keep up or not, I did not say its not going to be a factor at all. Rider abililty far out weighs the difference between 1 tooth on the sprocket. Top speed is not the only factor in 'keeping up'...

Thats what I wanted to hear
" run a 13t.....you will not regret it."

Sand stars are too much traction for a stock 400 motor.

That's the statement worth remembering, but it's not all about sandstars. 8-blade paddles are way too much for a 400, and most 450s. Too much paddle for the motor. Anything up to a slightly-modded 450 motor would see a massive benefit in running just a 6-paddle tire. My $0.02, FWIW...

Blade-height, blade-count, roll-out - those are the factors. 20" 8-blade Gliders are almost identical in hook-up to 20" 6-blade Haulers - it's all in the math at the beginning of this sentence. Choose wisely.... mhihi.gif

This is true. I see alotta people running a 8 to 10 paddle haulers on a stock 400 or 450. Just like Stars, thats too much. Even on a piped/jetted 450. From my experimenting with tires, a 9 paddle Hauler and a Star hook about the same. The little '1/2 V' in between each paddle on the Stars makes its hook ALOT more than a standard V. A bike that is 'under-tired' will be faster and easier to ride than one thats 'over-tired', especially for a beginner rider. It takes a pretty healthy motor to require the traction of a Sandstar.

I noticed a big difference when I switched from sand stars to 21x12x8 6 paddle extremes. Well worth it.
