Full Version: Where Are The Steepest Dunes At?
SuzukiCentral > :::Racing and Riding::: > Where to ride?

I ride at Little Sahara all the time. I LOVE climbing the steepest dunes I can find icon_biggrin.gif , and I want to know this, What place has the absolute steepest dunes? I want to go on a dune trip a little farther away from home and I want to know where the biggest, steepest dunes are.
letitsnow
Either Dumont in CA or St Anthony, ID. Both places have some FUN stuff!
LittleMissE
St. Anthony's has some stuff that will make some people want to cry. Once you go out there you learn a whole new way of how to ride in the dunes. At least I did. I had gone up some steep stuff but nothing compared to the St. Anthony's dunes. I haven't been to Dumont so I don't know how those compare but I have been to Little Saraha, UT and Little Saraha, OK and a lot of other smaller dunes.

If you want to look at pictures and some videos of dunes go to...

www.dunereview.com
cataway
i did some checking and it seams that dry sand can only retain a 30 degree angle on its own, so if you want
way high hills try LS Ut.
pink_longtravel_440
I've been checkin out vidoes and St Anthonys looks pretty f*ckin sweet. The 600+ ft Sand Mountain in LS Utah looks pretty bad-as$ too. But right now I'm thinkin St Anothonys for later this summer.

Haven't been to S.A. but I've been to L.S. and that place rocks...it's the closest thing to Glamis I've ever seen. Been to Dumont and in they're the steepest dunes I've experienced.
rinehart_mitch
Glamis has some stuff that my friends were suprised i made it up

Cataway is right. Dry sand can only pile up so steep. If you want to find some really steep climbs you need to ride wet sand or the oregon dunes where trees in the sand help keep it steep.

Thats right if its clean sand but add clay and ash binders into the sand and the angle of repose will increase.

Joking, I asked my Dad the other day if he'd take me to Glamis for my birthday and he said 'yeah, we can do that.' I was like 'no way, are you serious?!' shocker.gif , and he was serious. My birthday is this month but were gonna wait til February or March since we all got a few more mods to do before we go. I still wanna go to St Anthonys sometime this year, but I'm pretty sure Glamis will do the trick...haha. fd12f909.gif I CAN'T WAIT

yea ive seen video's on youtube on st. anthony's they are BIG! glamis is great miles and miles of riding and 2 hills used for racing, lots of bowls, and deffinetly china wall is alot of fun. but i would also go to dumont i havent been there but i deffinetly seen videos and there dunes are BIG good luck!

Alright, this is how I would list biggest and steepest places to ride in descending order. First by far is Sand Mountain Utah. Sand Mountain is over 700ft. high and the fingers are as steep as the steepest hill I've climbed(ChockeCherry Hill in St. Anthony) but almost twice as high. It's freakin nuts, and I have not attempted the fingers yet. Second would have to be ST. Anthony, the dunes there are absolutely awe strikingly huge, especially Devils Dune, Wow. You'll never see anything like them anywhere else. Third is Dumont, then Glamis. The funnest all around dunes I've been to is Glamis because it has everything and more and SO much freakin' area to ride. I'll be there this week from Wed-Mon. I can't wait!

Here they are. First is the monster Sand Mountain Utah

Chokecherry Hill St. Anthony Idaho.

Then China Wall at Glamis. Me and my buddies racing up it.

yup he preety much said it all that sand mountain looks killer icon_eek.gif i deffietly gotta go there some day. china wall is da best in glamis

The Kilpecker Dunes in Wyoming are big and with the wind they get steep and sharp... Cinders in Arizona are crazy... Though not really dunes.

If you want a technical sand climb come to Oregon and try out a tree shot... Deep loose sand trails that wind through the trees, so its not a brute strength thing.... You have to learn how to ride them with a bit of finesse...

All different, all fun.

Yeah, I agree, Oregon is a great place to ride. There are some pretty big and steep dunes there too.

ltz400 rider - I live in Thousand Oaks, about 40 minutes from Santa Monica. Let me know if you ever wanna go riding...

I'll throw my two pennies in for this topic. I've been to just about all of the above (Dumont, St Anthony's, Little Sahara, Pismo, Coral Pink, etc), and I still believe St Anthony's has the largest collection of steep dunes that I've been to. Sand Mountain is giant, especially on the left side, but overall St. Anthony's has the biggest dunes I've ever climbed. Amazing place, wish it was closer than the 2 day drive that it took to get there! I'd recommend it anyone who hasn't been, it's a blast.

Ditto man, St. A's is the biggest and best all around for sure!! I've never been more intimidated at dunes. It's nice to live within 4-1/2 hrs. bowdown.gif

That would be nice. I really can't complain though, I'm 2 hours from Pismo, 3 hours from Dumont, and 3 1/2 to Glamis. I'm at a nice little hub for these three! clap.gif
