got a couple dumb questions i cant seem to find.

I just bought a 87 LT250R quadracer for a steal of a deal. But couple things i need to figure out.

First the lug patterns. Rear wheels are a 5 lug. Fronts are a 4 lug.

5x130? 4x110? anyone know? Kinda need to find out soon because i need to buy wheels for my sand tires.

2nd. it doesnt have a stock air box. it only has a Cone Filter. Which i believe ive heard is bad. Im a really good TIG welder. So i was hoping to be able to make my own aluminum box. But Is there anything special about them? Anyhting i need to know? Or are they just a box to cover the filter from sucking up sand. I cant find a good picture of one.

So if anyone can provide good pictures, or sell me a cheap stock airbox, or let me know what i would need to know to make my own, that would be awesome.

Third. The front fenders were "race cut"
My main concern about this is safey. Im use to riding 4x4 utility quads out on the ranch, So with out those huge fenders covering the tires i would be getting pelted by rocks and crap. So having these race cut seems kind of dangerous to me. Yet It seems like tons of people do it.

Thoughts and opinions on that? Do i really have anything to worry about?

I will mostly be riding this on sand only hopefully. But not always, it will hit some gravel trails sometimes.
So i dont want to waste 100+ bucks on new fenders if i decide i like the race cut look better, and i wont have any problems with safety and getting hit in the face with a rock or soemthing.

Lastly. Jetting. Never had to deal with this w00ter.
THe guy i bought the bike from gave me this story:
It was running and he took it out for a ride in about 2 foot of snow. The temp could have been anywhere from 10-30 degrees im guessing. He said he got down the road and it died. Everyonce in awhile he could get it to fire and it would run for a few seconds and then die again. He got it home and tore the bike apart, and then lost interest. The motor is still all together, He said he did a compression test and it was good. however i havnt been able to confirm that yet. But it does have compression when i play with the kick start.

Someone said because it might not have been jetted for the cold weather he might have fried the rings.

Any imputs? Or do you think when i get this bike back together it might fire right up and have no problems.

I think thats all i have for now. Thanks in advance for the help.

It doesn't take long to take off the head and check...also I'd check the cylinder for scarring. If he burnt up the rings, chances are you'll need to hone the cylinder...or bore it.

I might have to pull that tomorrow then. Since its out and easy to do right now. Thanks.

Running no airbox is fine as long as there is nothing to directly blast the filter with sand, Such as a chain, rotor or anything. On my dads Pilot, we ran a Uni foam filter right on the carb. Turns out the brake rotor, that is directly below it, blasted it with sand and forced the sand through the filter, into the motor. We smoked a brand new motor this way. A foam filter will stop sand but not if it gets blasted with it constantly. However we run open filters on all our quads and since there is nothing to spray the filter with sand, we don't have any problems. I don't know how a 250r is setup, but check to see if anything is gonna spray the filter with sand. AND DO NOT RUN A K&N IN THE SAND!!!!EVER!!!

Front fenders will stop rocks and sand from hitting you if you have stock a-arms. Once you widen it, the fenders are pointless. I would leave them cut most definitely, it looks way better imo. Its not dangerous, just wear glasses or a helmet with goggles with and you'll be fine. Some people run fenders and some people don't. I'm sure you get mixed responses on this.

If he did ride in the cold w/o jetting up, it'd be running lean. If a 2 stroke runs too lean for too long it can burn a hole in the piston, but if its got compression then thats not the problem. But a motor that runs too lean, runs hot... If the rings get too hot they can lose their tension... So its possble it might need rings. I don't know if that is the case here considering the short amount of time he rode before it quit, but it is possible.
