i searched but didnt see anyone using this. has anyone tried this? easy to do? did it help? just trying to lower temps anyway i can. i do a lot of long trail rides. 40 miles and up. any info will be helpful. have engine ice and water wetter. about to get two cool oil additive and was thinking about the 400ex oil coller.

i think an aftermarket radiator such as fluidyne would be more effective and less of a hassle...
slghtr2000
yeah very true but i can get the 400ex cooler for free. the radiator would be pretty expensive. money is tight these days.

you know, i was just on ebay seeing if i could find a rear ex shock and seen one of these and was thinking the same as you. i think that yes it would work and work very well if the oil pump could handle the added pressure and also finding it a suitable location. try it out, and let everyone know. id def be interested in knowing.

Are you actually having overheating trouble or just trying to be cautious.

I have a cooler for a 450R that Im planning on using, but I have not hooked it up yet. Im planning on putting it in the line that returns to the tank from the engine.

You need to make sure that it doesnt affect the oiling system, they dont exactly run a lot of pressure. I am going to do a bunch of testing before trusting it, and I will post a thread when that time comes, but it wont be too soon. I have a ways to go on my build.

Here is how I mounted mine

im not overheating but i ride long trail rieds and just dont want to run into any problems. we ride 40+ miles on a regular basis. just looking for any cooling mod i can.

that looks good. im gonna play with the idea a little. i like your set up though

Whats the skinny on the long pins on your upper shock mounts
insaneZ400shane
that is a great fab job, hope it works, could be a real good thing.
Josh
Pins might be there just to hold the shock in during the build. But the oil cooler almost looks stock. Don't know how effective it will be that high up under the plastics.
insaneZ400shane
maybe he has a screen and no headlight, there would be direct flow then.

thats exactly what he has...

in my honest opinion, i think it would work, i mean they hold what? an extra 1/2 quart of oil? and the oil pressure on the z is only like 6 psi isnt it? and i could ONLY see this as a benefit if you are A) riding fast, because lets be honest, going like 20-30 mph with that under the plastics wont do squat for the oil, since it will be in and out in seconds. or B) if your doing mx or dune riding with a big bore/ stroker motor. the dunes here hit 115+ every summer, havin a 450 kit i know first hand that the engine ice and all the off the shelf stuff doesnt do a thing.... my fan is still on all day if im ridin in that heat.

also, to plea in the case of it working, if a few people have turbo'ed these quads and ran oil to the turbo's i think the cooler would be about the same as far as pressure needed to operate

Any extra oil cooler would be over kill for the type of riding you do, keep the radiator cleaned out and the use good coolant and i promise you will have no over hearting issues

OOPS I forgot about this one loser.gif

The pins are for something else I was working on. Made a set of limiter straps so I can back my springs way off (my shocks are threaded all the way to the end) to lower the quad for ice racing, but the straps keep the shock from extending out. In theory you could also use them to put a little wedge in the setup for circle track. I was just starting on that project about the time the 440 blew up, and never got to really test it.

My only worrys are flow restriction, and any pressure loss from pumping it up that high, however if I run the return line up there, it will not effect the oil pressure for the engine parts unless it runs the tank empty. Im going to be testing all of those things before I decide to rely on this setup.

Yep, check the avatar. I have been rid of the headlight for a long time.

Im surprised that no one noticed the old 3 wheeler tires on the back mhihi.gif I loaned my klaws to a buddy for the weekend

These pics were taken after the 440 was already blown up, and I was planning some things for the 490 build.

i use engine ice and water wetter. just trying to keep it running forever ya know. i would hate to overheat and trash it 40 miles form the truck. had the 400ex cooler laying around from a buddy and was toying with the idea
armstrong87
i tried it and didnt suceed i quit
insaneZ400shane
so what was the problem? lack of pressure? results not worth the trouble etc?
armstrong87
i didnt have the right tools for the right job if you no what im trying to say lol. not saying it wont work but im not sure if its worth the time and money to do it. my fan rarely ever comes on and i ride all day long in the high 90's temperatures outside
