bought an 87 lt250r for $600 last week, thought it was a basket case but was pleasantly surprised how well it came to life after a little TLC.
along with the usual service, when i went to replace the airfilter i noticed no airbox.
yes just the airfilter hanging off the carb.
cant find one around here yet, so im fab'n my own.
but for now i secured the filter to the frame so the carb wouldnt bounce all over, and coated the entire "UNI" filter with filter oil and went to the dunes.
looks like the new filter and filter oil did their job well, but i think i still need an airbox.

Any ideas for fab'n an airbox?
i found a garden spray bottle and cut off the lid and the bottom and the filter fits perf but cant figure how to keep dirt out.
ill post pics in a few.

Another "Q"- is the quad running lean without the airbox?
do i even need it? can i just keep the filter clean and oiled?- it ran great and didnt have any issues that i noticed.
should i re-jet without it?

It's really up to you as to whether or not you want an airbox. For the most part I'd say you'll be fine as long as you stay out of a lot of water or mud. A lot of people here don't run airboxes if anything they make a splash guard, thats pretty much the setup I have. As for it running lean I don't know much about 2 strokes so someone else is gonna need to help with that, if they are anything like 4 strokes though if it still stock jetting yes it's probably running too lean.

thanks for the reply, seemed like it was runnin fine without it.
didnt overheat, but i really dont know whats been done to it either.

i live in vegas,,,theres a shortage of water and mud here lol.
we roll out to Armagosa aka Big Dune, just for the sand.

maybe a pre-filter?
but then id have issues with the filter oil.

hmmmmmmm........

I think I have an airbox off of an 86 if you want it.
