Before starting it, kick it over SLOW at least 5 times then rail it and it should start 1st or second hard kick.
Also, before you park it, shut the gas off and let it idle out of gas. Otherwise, keep up on maintenance.

I completely disagree with running it out of gas! This is a 2 stroke and the piston gets lubricated by the fuel. Running it out of fuel is also running it out of lubricant! I would not run a 2 stroke dry.

I just got ahold of a 1986 also... it's not in near as good of condition as yours is. so far i've found a bad coil on it and just got it ordered. I'm hoping that's all it'll take to get the ol' girl running again.

Duncan Racing is your best bet, man. They're one of the early LT 250R pioneers out there that are still in business. You might find some stuff from CT Racing, too. They did good work on this engine. Try those guys first, check their webpages for tips and tricks. They both still have hard parts available, but I don't know how "readily available" those parts might be. Phones calls work wonders, too. Phonecalls get guys looking on the back shelf for stuff - things they don't even know might be there. Seriously.
