ok guys help me out with this problem please woring on an 05 z400 all stock but the silencer the guy tore it all down to paint the frame and have a friend of his change the head gasket due to antifreeze in the oil his friend never got to do that and the guy let the project go for almost 2 years and when he got back to working on it forgot how to put it back together thats where i got it got all the parts back on the bike and fixed his oil\water problems (hopefully) just got to try to start it today cranks over fires some not enough to run and a soon as i let of the starter button no more fire i thuoght that i had some wire connection backwards so double checked that seems ok started wiggling wires and connections made no difference just by chance i unplugged the generator connector and the thing started up and will idle but not rev up seems like the rev limiter is stopping it could the fact that the engine sat that long with water in the case have caused the stator to go bad or do i have another problem by the way once its running if i plug the gen connector back in it shuts the quad down please help would really like to get this done

It's possible that the water hurt the stator.
I would look more at the clutch side cover being bad for you water and oil problem.
It was a pretty common thing on that year.
I would say since it runs with the stator unplugged, it's shorting in some way... Either the flywheel smacked it cause the bolts backed out, or it is just shorted because of water.

take the stator cover off and just look at it. you might have a frayed wire that is grounding on the frame. i would check all your wires over real well before you did anything

will try a different stator after work tommorrow unless anyone else has any other ideas did check the wiring down to the stator cover nothing bare unless maybe inside sheeth there are wires that are shorting together will check that also this quadd did have the chain come off and smack the case but luckily no damage to case so maybe another reason that he quit riding it to not sure though he never said i really hate basket cases but the deal he made me was worth every penny and may even end up with the quad too

You can check the stator for wiring issues without even taking the cover off, if you've got a multimeter. Unplug the stator connector, and test the three Yellow wires, meter set to Ohms. This is an "insulation breakdown" test. Positive lead goes to each Yellow wire, one at a time, and negative lead goes to a ground. If you have continuity between any one of the three Yellow wires to ground, then you have insulation breakdown, and the whole stator is shot - continuity to ground. You shouldn't have any continuity to ground from those wires... My $0.02...
Ohm out the two wires for the pulser coil, too, and post up what you get for a reading...

thanks guys for all the suggestions, and the help from normal. found the stator to be junk, and when i replaced it i found something interesting, no magnatism at all. the stator that i put back on almost put itself on with its magnatism. thank you guys agian for all your help, i am still learning alot about mechanics and have been a well known locally, dodge mech. almost all my life.( is that any better zookie 400 ) haha.

Check for other problems while you're in there, if you're not finished yet...
Remove, clean, loc-tite and reinstall all 6 bolts in the flywheel, check the condition of the pulser coil (clean shavings from the magnetic tip, etc). Just look everything over pretty well and make sure it's alright...
