The stock chain on my 03' is in pretty bad shape and it needs to be replaced. The stock gearing is 14/40, but I would like to drop down 1 tooth in the front (13), and maybe go up a few in the rear (42-43).
What size (type and length) of chain will I need? I've seen two different sizes....520-112, and 520-96....which is it?
Thanks

i wouldnt recommend doing both sprockets like that unless you are running a 22" rear tire. With that combo it would be the same as goin down 1 tooth in the front with 20" tires. IMHO goin down 1 tooth in the front will give you a nice gain. You can use the stock length chain with that combo. I'm not sure how many link the stock chain is..it may be 96 but i'm not certain. I usually order 110 links and cut it to fit.

IF you go with what your talkin about, and stock sized rears, you will not have a 1st gear hardly i bet, and maybe a VERY short second, just get the 13/40 is what i would do, and its stock lenght for that combo

Thanks for the info guys. Yes, I'm running 22" tires in the rear. Does anyone know what the stock length on the chain is?
Thanks

Stock length is 96 links. That will work fine with a 13/40 combo.

Well with 22's in the rear then i would do some research... that may be alright, look around on the site

With 22" rears if you go down one tooth in the front you will be back at the same ratio as 20" rears and a 14t front. So if you want the same difference as goin 1 tooth down you'll really need to go down 2 in the front (sidewinder sells a 12t front) or 1 down in the front and 3 up in the rear like you originally wanted.

I'm running 22's with 13/40 and stock length chain. Pretty good gearing for hill climbs and woods riding of any kind, I road this down at H-M and did very well. If you went up in the back I think it would be geared too low and first would be real short. I'm running Primary Drives steel rear sprocket and from, PD x-ring chain also. Keep it adjusted, aligned and lubed correctly and you shouldn't have any problems.

Thanks for the info guys. I got on rockymountain last night and ordered new Primary Drive sprockets and one of the Primary Drive gold x-ring chains. I went with a 13 in the front (-1), and the stock 40 in the back.
Thanks again!

Hey Ian,
I have run all these combos with a stock chain. 12/42 works extremely well for Chadwick. It will keep you nicely in your power band in both 2nd and 3rd and works really well for the real technical climbs.
Also 13/42; 13/40; 14/40 have all worked with the stock chain. The tooth count in each combo is close enough to where the adjustment on the Z swinger will be enough in either direction.

I'm running a 13/41 combo and appreciate the torque. It depends on your terrain, but I typically ride tight trails. Good luck!

I like 14:41 good top and modest torque for tight and open trails. Tight w/96 chain, but I likey.

i ran 22"s a while back with 13/40 set up. it worked great for the torque but i lost alot of my top speed. that only mattered very seldom though. im back to 20"s now and i think im going to try a 14/41 setup and see how it works for me.
