Full Version: 2003 Z400 Timing Chain... Cranking But No Start

i've been searching for hours and cant find anything that help...

quad was running fine before installing new timing chain, chain was loose but didn't slip teeth on cam gears
always started fine, barely had to crank to get started

took off head, jug (i know i didn't need to do this but my first time so i thought it was like other quads), side cover on right side, clutch ect to get timing chain off

i have a 2003 z400
air box cover removed
uni air filter with outerwear
full exhaust
175 main jet

just put a new timing chain in and put it back together and now it will crank all day but wont fire

./ - spark (through spark plug wire and spark plug, even put in a new spark plug and gap is ok)
./ - fuel (even sprayed ether right into cyl.)
./ - timing is good (checked this about five times now)
./ - cranks over by hand smoothly (did this several times before cranking with starter)
./ - getting compression (can feel air through exhaust and hear it sucking in through intake)
./ - right timing chain (after cranking and checking its still on time)
./ - tried cranking with wide open throttle in case needle jet was pluged

i am completly out of ideas (and so is everyone i know)

anyone have any ideas as to why the quad wont start?
are there any switches or relays or anything that would prevent it from starting but still let it crank?

Did you check/adjust your valves? I bet that's causing your problems...You probably have 0 clearance.

You're positive you're not out 180 degrees on the timing right?

tried 180 three times, so definatly not that, and the valve clearence is within specs

about the 180 degrees off thing... it really doesn't matter with a magnito setup right? because it fires every time the crank comes around... its not like a distributor that is ran off the cams

thanks for the input though

your right, the z fires on every stroke so as long as you were on tdc when you put the cams in, and you put them in correctly you can't be 180 off.

It has to be something that happened while you were in there. It does sound like you know what you are doing though. I would take a picture of the topend while the motor is on TDCC, and check the valve clearances again. But before you can do all of this you can try pullstarting it with another quad, and if it fires up you'll know its valve clearance

i will check valve clearence quick then try to pull start... but they were good before we pulled everything apart

well i found the problem... hackattack was right
i have 0 clearence on the intake and way too much on the exhaust
i'm guessing my brother messed with the buckets and shims while the head was off because i checked before i did the chain and the clearences were all in spec

anyone have any advice on re-shiming?
Camaro1976
did you find out what type of cams you have?
list the current clearance, the current shim, and what valve its on and i can help you out.

It is really easy for stock cams because there is a page in the manual, but its different if you have different cams...
Camaro1976
heres the pages on valve shimming, one for intake one for exhaust. keep in mind these are for STOCK CAMS
